Prizes and Awards

In February 1984, I gained the prize for my presentation about modern obstetrics, to the women of Ulster in County Londonderry (United Kingdom) and about which articles were published in the local press.

In January 1987, I achieved First Prize in the "Gynaecology Endocrinology Contest" organised by Serono Laboratories, United Kingdom. There were 1300 gynaecologists worldwide in the competition.

In December 1989, I obtained the first prize for the best lecture of the year in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, sponsered by the Multidisciplinary Postgraduate Centre, Royal Air Force Hospital, Ely, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. I was awarded with the special plaque of the Air Force Hospital, Ely, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom.

In December 1993, my research on "Postpartum Haemorrhoids" won the recommended reading of the year, Maternal Health, by the Australian Perinatal Society.

In February 1996, I received a prize for my publication "Unusual contents of a dermoid cyst of the ovary removed by Laparoscopy". The publication contained a photograph of a well formed lower jaw with cartilage, teeth and tongue removed from the ovary of a 22 year old women, by the laparoscope. This was the first such photograph in the international medical press.

In December 2001, I received a Certificate of Appreciation for my role as a Scientific Moderator, the 10th International Congress of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) New York, USA.

In September 2002, I was awarded the Prize for the best manuscript in Operative Gynaecological Endoscopy, the 11th International Congress of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA for my scientific paper about my personal series "Laparoscopic Appendectomy - Gynaecologist or General Surgeon?", Erian M, McLaren G. I made a strong case for laparoscopic appendectomy to be performed by a Gynaecologist competant at endoscopic surgery, even in complicated cases.

In September 2002, I received a Certificate of Appreciation for my role as Scientific Moderator, the 11th International Congress of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

In September 2002, I received a Certificate of Appreciation of Presentation for my Scientific Manuscript of "Cost effective method to laparoscopically retrieve specimens in gynaecological operations", Erian M, McLaren G. Presented at the 11th International Congress of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

In September 2002, I was awarded the highly prestigious position of International Advisor to the Board of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Florida, USA, in appreciation of my International profile in the field of minimally invasive surgery and my perpetual endeavours to maintain a high standard of Endoscopic surgery. I am currently the only Australian surgeon to be awarded this position.

In November 2002, I received a Certificate of Appreciation for my role as a Scientific Moderator, the 31st International Congress of Gynaecological Endoscopy, held at Miami, Florida, USA.

In September 2003, I was given the Honourable Mention prize for my research on "Quality Assurance, Hysteroscopic Surgery" in the 12th International Congress Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

In September 2003, I was appointed as Chief Scientific Moderator for the 12th International Congress of Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Las Vagas, Nevada, USA, as appreciation of my International endeavours to uphold very high standards of minimally invasive surgery.

In September 2003, I was given a certificate of recognition of presentation for my research on Quality Assurance, Laparoscopic Surgery, in the above International Congress.

In September 2003, I was given a certificate of appreciation for my research work on Laparoscopic Defogger "Suzie" The latter invention won the prize of the best innovation of the year, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, 2003.

In September 2003, I gained the Honourable Mention, during the launch of 6th Edition of Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialities. The launch was in Brisbane, Australia, and this is one of the most respected references in clinical medicine. I was the main author for the obstetric part of the book.

In October 2004, I gained the certificate of Chief Scientific Moderator, SLS, 13th International Congress, New York, USA, in appreciation to my high standard of performance and perseverance to excell the advancement of the multi-disciplinary art of endoscopic surgery.

In October 2004, I gained the certificate of appreciation for presentation, SLS, 13th International Congress, New York, USA.

In Spetember 2005, I gained the certificate of Chief Scientific Moderator, SLS, 14th International Congress, San Diego, USA.

In Spetember 2006, I gained the certificate of Chief Scientific Moderator, SLS, 15th International Congress, Boston Massachusetts, USA.

In September 2007, I gained the certificate of the highly prestigious position of Chairman of Congress, SLS, 16th International Congress, San Francisco, California, USA. This was the first time an Australian Consultant was appointed as a Chairman of this international multidisciplinary minimally-invasive surgical congress.

In December 2007, I received the International Medal of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons in appreciation of my role in pioneering and teaching minimally invasive gynaecological surgery.

In December 2010, I received a Certificate of Appreciation for my contribution to the community in the delivery of quality medical education in Queensland - presented by Dr David Wilkinson, Head, School of Medicine.

In May 2012, I received a Certificate of Competence of Colposcopy and cervical procedures, Australian Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.

In September 2012, I received a Certificate of Appreciation for being a Faculty member and Chief Scientific Moderator, 21st Conference, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

In March 2013, I received a Certificate of Competence for Fetal surveillance and electronic fetal heart monitoring" from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, (course and exam held at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Brisbane, February 2013).

In April 2013, I received a Certificate of Excellence at medical education for being an "inspirational teacher", Obstetrics and Gynaecology, School of Medicine, University of Queensland.

In April 2013, I received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Australian Medical Association, Queensland (AMAQ) for my positive role as a entor of elective medical students of Queensland University over the past 10 years.

In August 2013, I received the First Prize Award, International Conference of Multidisciplinary Endoscopic Surgeons, held in Washington D.C., USA, for my clinical work on Advanced Hysteroscopic Surgery, "Advanced Hysteroscopic Surgery - Where are we now?".
